Why Gratitude is the Key to your Success

If you want more abundance in your life then an attitude of gratitude is fundamental. I want you to believe this because it is true. For some, this is difficult to understand and accept so in this article I will explain my reasoning and why expressing gratitude will lead to you experiencing more success.

The World Owes You Nothing

One of the biggest problems in society today is that so many people believe that the world owes them something. They may come from a place of entitlement or have a belief that they have worked hard and so they are owed a break. Some may feel that they should not need to put in an effort to get what they desire. Let’s face it we live in an instant gratification world. A World where we are capable of making a significant impact, and quickly too, which has often set unrealistic expectations.

A lot of people end up being disappointed because they cannot easily get their hands on what they believe the world owes them. Social media piles on the pressure by depicting images of people leading perfect lives. But this is not always true and it is just a way to want people to desire more things. Without this desire, most businesses would not exist.

If you live in a world of “want” then you will never be truly happy in your life. You may always be striving for the next shiny object rather than reflecting on what truly matters in life.

When you have an attitude of gratitude you appreciate the things that you have in your own life. My experience of teaching mindfulness and emotional intelligence has made me realise just how much we take for granted. Having a roof over my family’s head is one of the main ones I often express gratitude for.

Gratitude Overcomes Entitlement

When you are truly grateful for the things in your life you will overcome any feelings of entitlement. This does not mean that you will never have other things in your life — far from it. Some people think that expressing gratitude is saying “thank you” every time you receive something or if someone helps you out.

But saying thank you is just expected. It is the norm in life. As a child, you were taught to say thank you by your parents and teachers. And so was everybody else. True gratitude goes beyond this. It takes additional effort than just uttering those two words.

How to Practice Gratitude

An easy way to do this is to think about the things that exist in your life right now. Reflect on how they make you feel. For example, you may have a job that doesn’t pay you that much but it keeps a roof over your head and makes sure that you have food on the table. So you can be truly thankful that you have this job.

The same goes for the people in your life right now. Your partner, your children, your parents, your friends. Think about why you are so grateful that you have these people and then be thankful for feeling the warmth from them.

A technique I use is a gratitude log in the Remente App. This is more a general reflection App but it allows daily task reminders to be set and an ability to add notes to those. in counting, I have logged over a thousand items of gratitude against categories such as:

  • From yesterday I am grateful for…
  • In my simple things, I am grateful for…
  • In my great events, I am grateful for…
  • In my relationships, I am grateful for…

Gratitude and your Success

Remember, if you spend your life being negative and complaining that you do not have the things that you are entitled to then you will send out negative signals to the Universe. If you constantly send out negative signals then the Universe will align itself to provide you with more negative things.

With an attitude of gratitude, you will send positive signals to the Universe. The Universe will believe that you are happy with what you have and align itself to provide you with more. This is where the link to success and abundance comes in.
